<LunchBot> You attempt to land in an active volcano. Your computer melts into a pool of molten silicon, metal and ribbon cables.
<Althego> yes obviously
<Mat2ch> Yes, that happens if you do that...
<Althego> alonf with the ship
<Mat2ch> and myself
<Judge_Deddly> Nah you'll be fine
<Judge_Deddly> You're in mission control and dear crew can't sue

<Althego> yes they can once they come back
<Althego> or their families
<Judge_Deddly> Well, you can ensure their clones are on the next Eve mission, and their families, well, you're the one with the rockets
<Judge_Deddly> Also, I wonder if I'm the only one who plays with respawning turned off?
<Mat2ch> no, you are not
<Mat2ch> but I always tried to keep all my Kerbals alive.
<Judge_Deddly> Same here. As soon as I can, I design in escape mechanisms for experimental craft, and my tourist SSTOs are extensively tested with only the pilot in them
<Mat2ch> I just do return to launchpad and lots of quicksaves ;)

<Judge_Deddly> Om man, I just discovered Powertoys
<Judge_Deddly> How is this not standard in Windows??
<Mat2ch> You should've searched for Linux :P
* Mat2ch hides
<Mat2ch> I use Debian btw
<Judge_Deddly> I have absolutely nothing against Linux. In fact, I would love to have it as my daily driver. But there are some custom applications that I use on a daily basis that just don't work.
<Judge_Deddly> Maybe through a VM
<Judge_Deddly> In fact, I would also like to try Aros
<Judge_Deddly> With my new computer, I might actually be able to try running apps in a VM
<Mat2ch> You can try and run them with Wine
<Judge_Deddly> Does Wine work with Microsoft store apps yet?

<LunchBot> You get a slight hydraulic fluid injection injury. You fool! You've killed us all!
<Mat2ch> UWP apps will be a problem. It looks like some people are working on it, but to me this seems like I'm back in 2005...
<Judge_Deddly> I'll soon be installing Linux on my old machine, so I'll have a play around with that at some point. But I don't think it has the oomph to run a VM
<Judge_Deddly> Is Mint still the go-to for those used to Windows?
<Mat2ch> It got a release lately, so yes
<Mat2ch> I'm not a Ubuntu fan though, I stick to Debian
<Judge_Deddly> There is a Debian variant of Mint
<Judge_Deddly> Or at least, there used to be one
<Judge_Deddly> What is the advantage of Debian over Ubuntu? Rolling updates?
<Althego> that ubuntu us shit
<Althego> in turn debian is always old, unless you use testing or unstable
<Althego> ubuntu is always pushing the latest fad from canonical
<Althego> which fails half of the time
<Althego> so you have to fight some nonstandard stuff
<Althego> now some packages, like browsers or mail client comes in flatpak instead of apt, so for example thunderbird creates a temp dir in downloads, because they think it is sane
<Althego> it drives me insane every time i see it
* Judge_Deddly fines Althego 1 Euro for the language
<Althego> yes i realized it after i wrote it
<Judge_Deddly> :P
<Judge_Deddly> I last used Linux on a regular basis before flatpak existed and the whole thing confuses me
<Althego> apparently the last decades programmers think you cant have enough package managers
<Judge_Deddly> Flatpak files are ginormous, right?
<Althego> one for the os, one for perl, one for python, one for rust, one for the fun of it (that is flatpak)
<Judge_Deddly> Didn't the Mint devs refuse to support Flatpak, or am I remembering wrong?
<Althego> oh and in 24.4 i again cant play sid files because it failes for some reason
<Judge_Deddly> Anyway, so, Althego, are you saying that Ubuntu itself is rubbish and that also applies to Mint? And that Debian is rubbish, which also applies to the other Mint variant?
<Althego> piéseaudio, another plague lennart poettering cursed us with
<Althego> it can work
<Althego> for some people, sure
<Althego> but i dont even do much with it, and still annoys me
<Althego> debian has different problems
<Judge_Deddly> Maybe I should just go with Aros and done with it
<Althego> like when it comes with a broken kernel and i am trying to install new ones from backports whenever they come out, hoping those would fix the pronlem
<Althego> doesnt seem to be to bad this time around. yet
<Althego> also never use btrf, it is not worth it
<Judge_Deddly> I don't know what that means
<Judge_Deddly> Which distro are you using, anyway?
<Althego> btrfs
<Althego> oh but it is fast. yes, until it is slow, because deleting can be slow. and eats up all the io. or there is something wrong in the kernel causing data loss. looking at you parent transid verify failed error
<Judge_Deddly> OK. Weird
<Althego> normally i would use debian, and most of the systems i "rule over" use them. but the company laptop has ubuntu
<Althego> the idea of lxc is good. but then ubuntu could not let it be, they had to make lxd. ah because it is better (cant really be, uses the same underlying thing). apparently the community could not accept this, so now there is incus. supposedly even betterer. ah yes, i am goingto let you fight it out, i will stay on lxc
<Judge_Deddly> I don't know what any of these things are
<Althego> lxc is basically chroot with kernel assisted limitations so that it can work as a sandbox. doesnt have its own kernel, but most of the time this is good, and takes less resource
<Althego> (than a vm)
<Judge_Deddly> And chroot is...?
<Althego> chroot moves the filesystem root to somewhere else (as root). so for example you can have a complete other linux in a subdirectory and run programs in that environment (i used to run suse on debian this way). the kernel is shared between the host and guest., which can have drawbacks. but chroot was never designed to eb a sandbox, but only for having a separate environment. that is where lxc nad later lxd comes in. based on kernel
<Althego> cgroups, it can actually limit access. so if you dont need a specific kernel or cpu architecture, linux on linux is good in an lxc
<Judge_Deddly> That's pretty cool
zeemate_ has quit [Ping timeout: 201 seconds]
<Althego> vm on linux usually means qemu, which can emulate different hardware architectures, and gives you full vm. i have never even tried to use that bare. but proxmox does a good job at giving you control over both lxc containers and qemu vms. it is its own distro though
<Judge_Deddly> I'll have to look into it later – I still have Windows on it for a bit

<Mat2ch> Judge_Deddly: chroot is just moving the root-directory to a different place, runs on the same level as the current kernel. lxc is container virtualization. Uses the virtualization extension of the cpu. But container virtualization means you are not running your own kernel. qemu is full virtualization (using the virtualization extension of your cpu as well), but runs its own
<Mat2ch> kernel.
<Mat2ch> and flatpack is just "we are putting aaaaaalllllll the files a program needs and the program itself in a zip file and run it.
<Mat2ch> Waste of space, makes integration hard, totally not the unix philosophy, so perfect for ubuntu.

<Judge_Deddly> Thanks for the info Mat2ch
<Judge_Deddly> So it's basically like some old applications that required Workbench back in the floppy disk era - sometimes they would bundle a cut-down version of the OS right on the floppy
<Mat2ch> it's more like the windows way, where every program brings their own DLLs even if they exist already.

<Silent_but_Deddly> fix*
<Silent_but_Deddly> That was an unfortunate typo
<Althego> maybe not always, i dont think they always have the camera on site. but when they do, that is better than nsf (yes, confusing, sfn is not nsf)
<Silent_but_Deddly> Oh wait... Who are SFN?
<Althego> the only bettertracking is uslaunchreport, but that is never live, they release footage later
<Silent_but_Deddly> Oooh Spaceflight Now
<Althego> sfn: spaceflight now, nsf: nasa spaceflight (not nasa), nfs: need for speed (game)

<X> “Getting to space is the first step
<X> In building our multi planetary future”

<Althego> anyway since spacex doesnt stream on yt now, it is better to watch the launches on some other channel
<Althego> instead of twitter
<Silent_but_Deddly> I see.
<Silent_but_Deddly> Or you could watch one of a bajillion fake streams

<Silent_but_Deddly> Is it military?
<Althego> yes, nrol
<Althego> hah and earth is not flat
<Althego> still
<Silent_but_Deddly> Whaaaaaaaaaa
<Silent_but_Deddly> FAKE
<Althego> carter, i can see my house
<Silent_but_Deddly> Crazy stuff
<X> How do they get the rocket to land in the same spot? Do they not do a gravity turn before separation?
<Mat2ch> the do, but they also do a boost back
<Althego> there was a little time while the rocket was completely horizontal
<Althego> that was when it was doing the boostback burn
<Mat2ch> without the upper stage and most of the fuel the boost back burn is really cheap
<Althego> that was when i said not flat earth
<Althego> because for a wide angle lense you can be s ure there is no distortion when the line goes through the center
