lxc is basically chroot with kernel assisted limitations so that it can work as a sandbox. doesnt have its own kernel, but most of the time this is good, and takes less resource

vm on linux usually means qemu, which can emulate different hardware architectures, and gives you full vm. i have never even tried to use that bare. but proxmox does a good job at giving you control over both lxc containers and qemu vms. it is its own distro though
